Trip 10 - South Africa & Zimbabwe

22nd December 2019 to 22nd February 2020

After several ski season and motorhome trips in Europe we decided to venture further afield and visit southern Africa as a safari has always been on our list.

The interactive map below shows the places we visited and includes photos, information and links to blog entries for each place. You can access these details either by clicking on a map marker or enlarging to full screen and clicking the box (top left) to reveal a list of places in order and click on each one in turn.

Thanks for looking, we hope you enjoy reading:

Our plan:

Unusually for us this two month trip was almost fully planned, the main reason being is that we had never been to Africa before and were slightly worried about safety issues, so a full plan helped to ensure we planned properly and investigated where and where not to go without making decisions on the fly (as we usually do on our trips) and possibly getting into trouble. This trip has given us confidence to be more adventurous in future trips.

We flew out to Johannesburg on 22nd December, arriving on 23rd, picked up a hire car and, after a night stay in a local B&B, did a two week housesit in an apartment in Northcliff, J'Burg over Christmas and the New Year (24th December and 5th January 2020), looking after Willow cat.

After two further nights in an apartment of a friend of the housesitter, still in Northcliff, Joburg, we handed the car in and flew to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on 8th January for 3 days of sightseeing.

Here's the 3 weeks Exodus tour route
We returned to J'Burg and picked up a 3 week Exodus overland tour with 11 other people to travel to Cape Town, with visits to Kruger National Park, Swaziland, Drakensburg mountains, Rorkes Drift, Lesotho and the Garden Route to Cape Town, finishing on 30th January.

The next day Jackies mum, Pauline arrived on a flight from the UK to join us for our final three weeks. We hired another car and drove through the wine growing areas (meeting a cousin of Brians he had never met), along part of the south coast to the southern most point of Africa, inland through some mountains and the famous Route 62, back to the southern coast and the Garden Route for several visits to safari parks, finishing in Port Elizabeth and finally flew back to the UK on 22nd February.

Here's our plan for our road trip showing some of the stops
All hotels and accommodation were booked in advance as were most trips, but we did manage to squeeze in an extra game drive and some other sights on the advice of Chantel, our Exodus tour guide.
