A short 10 day cruise to see the Northern Lights, something we've always wanted to see. We decided the easiest way was to take a cruise on a smallish cruise liner, so we booked with Fred Olsen, who we've been with before. They've only got, I think, 3 ships, they are smaller (maximum 1300 passengers plus crew), we've been on the Bollette before, this one is the Borealis, it's sister ship with almost the same layout.
We quite like their programmes, they offer daily lectures covering information on the ports of call, georgraphy, geology, history and cultural as well as general subjects, which we quite like. There's a bit of ballroom dancing on a small floor which suits us and there's a couple of formal nights where you can dress up if you like so posh frocks and dinner suits were packed.
We booked a cabin with a window low in the ship and central in case of rough seas (there will be less roll there) and near to a staircase for quick exit to a deck should the aurora make an appearance. We asked for a phone call at any time of the night should there be a light show, as we don't want to miss it.
There were only three ports of call, but we stayed in Narvik, high up in Norway in the Arctic Circle and took a train ride and, at night an aurora hunting trip inland to Sweden and saw some amazing auroras.
This time we traveled with my sister Denise and husband Paul, which was really good to have company and a great opportunity to catch up with them.
We departed Portsmouth on 4th January and returned on 14th, leaving our car there for quick arrival and return.
The map below has place markers showing the places we stayed at with lines showing our route. Click on each place marker to see details.
Below are links to the blog posts we made on the way. Click on each one to read where we've been, what we saw and what we did. Happy reading!
Here's a map of our route showing places we visited. To see it properly you'll need to click on the little square in the top right corner which will take it to full screen. It opens a new tab and you'll be able to browse round, zoom in and click on each marker to show more details.
